However, now that they apparently do allow arxiv preprints BEFORE their papers are published, it&amp;#39;s not as big a deal as before (at least I THINK that&amp;#39;s their current M.O.)&lt;br /&gt;   A bigger questions is: if you publish a paper that you KNOW to be wrong, why isn&amp;#39;t that academic misconduct?  Why shouldn&amp;#39;t those authors face misconduct hearings at their own institutions AND by Nature? On the other hand, the journals have to have a way of making money, or peer-review publishing won&amp;#39;t be viable.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I&amp;#39;d like to suggest a time limit for exclusive rights.  Maybe three months after the paper is published, or six months after it&amp;#39;s accepted for review, whichever comes first?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I don&amp;#39;t know how long the review process takes, so the review period may have to be extended.  In any case, the publisher gets paid by those who want the results NOW, and curious laymen like me can wait a few more months until it&amp;#39;s free.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;N.
